Squirrels Team Member

Team Squirrels
Storyteller? Den-maker? Craft expert? Whatever your skills, we want you to join the adventure and help our eager four to six year old Squirrels gain skills for life.

One session you might be exploring the great outdoors. And the next? Learning new things right on your doorstep.

We’re all about teamwork here at Dringhouses Scouts. In the Squirrels team, you might be planning their first ever trip to the forest. Or, maybe you’ll help mentor your fellow volunteers. Struggling with communication or organisation? Not a problem - the beauty of volunteering in a team means there’s likely someone who can help you out. And that’s what volunteering with us is all about!

By helping out, you’ll be creating lifelong memories for our Squirrels. And when they’re ready, you’ll send them of as excited Beavers, ready to grow, explore and take on new adventures.

A typical weekday session might look something like:

Running playful activities and fun games
Helping and supporting our youngest Scouts
Chatting and collaborating with fellow volunteers and parents and carers.

We run three Squirrel nights each week during term time - Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

Our Squirrels team works closely together, supporting each other with planning and sharing ideas. This collaborative approach helps spread the load and ensures all our Squirrels are exploring the same key themes and challenges at the same time.

Role Description

Our Team Members are volunteers who plan, deliver, and support an amazing programme for young people. They can volunteer flexibly. Some may give their time every week, while others may give as much or as little time as they want.

Role Requirements

All Team Members will create a safe environment for everyone, but specifically:

Check the programme can run safely.
Make sure the team maintains adult to child ratios and there’s a leader in charge for each meeting.
Create and review risk assessments.
Check there are first aid kits or supplies for all activities.
Review safety incidents and report them in the right way.
Report any safeguarding concerns directly to the UKHQ Safeguarding Team.
Brief helpers on the practical aspects of safety and safeguarding. This includes giving them a copy of the Yellow Card and confirming they’ve read and understood it. Make sure helpers know who to speak to if they have any concerns.

Plan and deliver a great programme:

Work with young people to plan and deliver a great programme, including nights away and adventurous activities, to help them achieve their Top Awards.
Find ways to continue to improve the programme.

Make sure there’s a great culture for everyone:

Help young people and volunteers feel welcome and included, and make changes (when necessary) so the environment and activities are inclusive and accessible for everyone.
Check everyone behaves positively and in line with Our Volunteering Culture.
Help volunteers develop, including Young Leaders.
